Super Mario bros Z ep.8

"You know..."

date: October 13, 2009

I really dig how you've turned the series. It's actually really great, I love it.

There's a lot to review, so let's get to it XD

First off, I love your title screen. It's a really great look compared to the other episodes, it adds some nice originality, and the remixed "Super Mario Bros." music goes really well. Props for that one too.

One thing that immeadiatly stuck out to me, were the custom drawn graphics, those were placed perfectly and really sparked up the intensity of the episode, the only thing i'd probably go with is maybe separate them a bit better, it seemed rushed at times to just throw them in there. But as said, I personally, found them VERY impressive.

Another thing I quite enjoyed was the balance of Story, and fighting. As Super Mario Bros. Z is most popular for the fight scenes, it caused fans to get a bit tense with the last episode with the really long back story (That doesn't seem to have anything to do anymore...?), and thus create a bit of ill feelings. But in this episode, I found you hit it right on the mark. I love how you actually put in a rather interesting plot, and the way you ended this episode REALLY got me thinking. Actually, now that I think on it, I kinda got an idea as to what may happen! El woot-nay! XD

I really like all of the references you've placed throughout the series, it really appeals to me how all games from both series's play a semi-role in all of the episodes. Poison Mushrooms, super forms, weapons, their locations, as well as the characters own personalities sort of kick in. One thing that kinda irked me was how you kinda go TOO into some of the plot details. Like Sonic's speech to Shadow, I found that went on slightly too long, and may also have irked the fans a bit.

...Oh yeah! I do like the input of the beginning "Last time on Super Mario bros. Z!" text scroll. It definantly gives it a "Dragon Ball Z" feel, however I felt you could've linked up the Episode Title music a bit better with the "Last Time" music, just adjust the scroll speed to try to linkn it up a bit smoother XD

And before I forget, the 3-D designs were pretty well done, the only thing I think maybe could use some improvement is... uh... how to explain it... Size and Shadows? Yeah, the Ship often felt smaller than it actually is. Like, sometimes the hills look bigger than the ship itself, while when it closed in on Bowser sitting (At the beginning), it felt the ship was tiny, then gradually grew. It really was an amazing attempt, I must admit, but I just felt like giving a little feedback ^ ^;

Hmm... anything left out...?

Yeah! The minor details! I adored that about your recent episodes! The little things you include that make everything go a bit better, or appeal more than usual. Like Mario's facial expression when he finds the note while reading, the Curious expression, with the serious ones transitioned perfectly, as well as all the Sprite improvements (I felt the sprite's colors were a bit more vibrant than before). And the scenery/backgrounds looked astounding, especially on the ship. It really impressed me as to the amount of effort seen through this whole episode, and definantly worth all of the wait.

I'm pretty sure i'm forgetting something, but i'll probably write it down and include it for the next episode.

Overall, this episode blew my mind, from the Fire Flower Sonic, to the Story's intensity, it's a 5/5 and a 10/10 from me.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT rush on the next episode! Take your time and produce astounding work like you've come to be known for! All of your episodes are so worth the wait, and more!

Hope to see more!

The Facebook Problem

"Very, very nice!"

date: October 7, 2009

First of all, congratulations on front page and all of your awards, you really earned them! This was an amazing flash with tons of detail (Which i'm focusing on in this review) that's really worth mentioning.

The beginning starts out perfect. It sets a mood everyone can get used to. Children playing, wierd long tongued couples making out, the Sun is smiling, all perfectly tied together with a lady walking her dog, and a biker biking. +1 for great mood.

The transition to the car was super well done, and again, the details with the Phone's alarm very well played out. Sound effects were especially good here. The change in music and mood was excellent as well. The music slowed down, and then the black screen and the hilariously well placed "OHHHHH SHIIIITTT!!!" put in a hilarious statement attracting the audience's attention to what'll play out after the long massacre of pedestrians.

Again, the sound effects and music played a huge role and again, were well used to show this car scene's outcome. The only real issue (And the only reason i'm bringing it up is because of how big you were on details) is the dialog "You has a Message"; you flipped it over when you looked at the phone from the opposite side. Rather than just increase the size on the side closest to it. A small detail, but one easily overlooked.

Next would be Jim's untimely demise, another well played scene with great drama and execution. The details in the art, and especially the intrails made this scene really dramatic and serious looking, yet the stereotypical "Come closer" prepares the viewer for the obviously funny Facebook part as the title leads you to believe, but you played us and made the scene even better with an unexpected twist of "Hold these"; and that's definantly a plus in my book xD

The voice acting here was really well done, and emotion could clearly be seen here. I also liked how the emotion all of the faces were really well animated too, as well as lip syncing. As for the sound effects here, you can guess how it all came out ;).

As for the negative parts (Detail missed) of this scene, you drew the cop's gun backwards XD

And finally, the Facebook page. Here's where your attention to details really showed. All the buttons had something to offer, and not everything could be caught with simply one view. The "View photos of my ass (6000)" and the "Rape" tag, as well as all the comments made everything work so well. The only complaint I have for that scene is the update times (Another small detail overlooked). In the beginning you started changing the update times with every update, for the realistic look. However, you stopped this near the end making everything say "3 Seconds" rather than changing them originally (3 Seconds, changed to 24 Seconds, then to 1 Minute, etc.) Another small detail overlooked, as said XD

Overall, everything was amazing! With only a small few detailed errors, everything came out smoothly, all the jokes executed wonderfully, and the point which was trying to be made, was clear. You, my friend, have just created a masterpiece!

You get a 5/5 and a 10/10 from me, great work!

Current Score: 4.54 / 5.00 (Unfortunantly I had to refresh after watching it this morning, so I don't know how much my vote affected this XD)

I look forward to future submissions!

Sonic And Shadow Vs Nazo

"Actually..."

date: September 16, 2009

It wasn't bad. Sure it was a bit slow, and the dialogue could use some fixing up, but overall not bad.

Some specifics you could work on are your timings. Try to make the flash flow a bit more smoothly. What I mean is for what you're aiming for, try to go frame by frame and make things run a bit more fast paced and make it come together a bit more clearly. And example would be where Nazo punched Super Sonic, he just sat there for a few seconds, then jumped back, and sat there a few more seconds. Try to fix that up a bit.

The ending is promising, sure there are too many forms shown for one episode, but i'm sure you're trying to fix it up. I'll be watching!

Life with Navi

"What's with people?"

submission: Life with Navi
date: August 21, 2009

How isn't this original? Sure people have done animations of where Navi was annoying; but none close to this. I love the Animation style, and the emotion in it as well. I did enjoy when she spazzed to a twig XD Never saw it coming. All right onto the review.

Style: LOVE the art style. It's cute, attractive, and overall fun to watch. The details in the scenery were great, the facial expressions on Link very well done, and Navi's spazness was done perfectly. I couldn't see any real flaws with your style, well done ^ ^

Writing: It was very well made. It's a completely original twist on the whole "Annoying Navi" scenereo. And i'll admit, when I saw the twig (As stated before) I spit my drink laughing XD But now that I think about it, when Link's eye twitched, it could've went on for a second longer. I felt it sort of rushed when he pulled the shotgun out, but easily forgiven, as you did state it was for a collab and time constraints could often affect the animation.

Sounds and Voices: All perfectly placed, i've not seen any sound too repetetive, overused, or out of place. Even Navi's "HEY! LISTEN!?" were well placed and seemed almost fitting for each part.

Replayability: Great! I watched it 4 times XD And plan on showing it to others. Very nice work here, and do indeed hope to see more work from you two in the future!

Overall 5/5 10/10 Very good!

--The Zelda Collab--

"Very nice!"

date: June 6, 2009

This collab is a unique one. I really liked the Author's Interactive Stage, as well as the bonus scenes. They weren't too hard to find, but cleverly hidden.

A couple things i've noticed is that 1) There were 4 Hidden hearts, while the end of the credits says there is only 3. (Your Author Comments says 4 as well, so I thought you'd want to know to maybe fix that.) and 2) In the Author stage, if you continuously hold to the left and hold up on the castle while in the normal realm, you can climb the castle. Then continuously do it till you fall off the stage.

Some things I particularly thought was pretty cool was the Replay button, and how it used Majora's Mask as a reference, and very end of the Credits with Midna. (Not spoiling for those who've yet to play Twilight Princess ;D) I also like the Bonus scenes. Although I must admit I laughed the hardest at Bonus Scene 1, I must give props to Bonus Scene 4, I thought that rendition of Wind Waker was hilarious XD

The Animation on this was supurb, and you could easily spend about an hour doing all the extras (Although the Twilight Realm Secret in the Author's Bios could use some fixing up. Maybe not make us hold the buttons? Or rather click them to switch? The bonus in the castle was... odd...? And the Author who transforms in the Twilight Realm was also clever.)

Oh! I also wanna point out how the Artist Arkhe has a cool sprite representing himself. I liked how it changed into Midna when you approach it. Sorry, I just liked it XD

Overall this flash had amazing points, and is a great addition to Newgrounds, as well as the Zelda Collection.

I gave it a 5/5 and of course, a 10/10. Very nice work!

Mario vs. Luigi 3

"Get a bit of pride in your work!"

submission: Mario vs. Luigi 3
date: May 5, 2009

Hm... it was overall not very bad at all...

My biggest problem is how you take no pride in any of your movies (That i've seen so far anyway.) Take some pride in your work! It's great! Some of the best animation i've seen! You only lack motivation, which you could easily find from your fans! Sure, it may not have come out exactly as planned, nothing ever does! Just having tried your best makes it worthwhile! Which you CAN do, simply take the time to find the reason you want to make projects and go with them =D

Anyway, onto the movie.

I really like the menu, looks very pleasing, and the buttons were nicely made. Of course, you could have done more to it, but as you've pointed out, unfinished. The sound effects on the choices were very nice as well.

I like how you started a couple seconds before anything new. You gave a quick "Oh yeah!" to remind us what happened last episode. A HUGE thumbs up is how you added more voices and more reality to it than other movies. Such as SMBZ, sure it's fast and visually amazing, but it's a nice little break from all that, a nice refresher to remind us how fights can be amazing without so much reference to DBZ. I'm not saying SMBZ is better, i'm saying that both that, and this, have their own appeal, that you can't say one style is better than the other. It's really a great touch.

The music choice was very nice, it added a climatic feel to it, and the motions of the sprites were very nice as well, as were the sound effects placement. The fact you have gravity is also very appealing. As most wouldn't even consider a fast fall for normality.

You also kept things fresh, the airplanes were very good, you could have done a bit more with them, and not had ended it so quickly, but very nice.

I felt the climax was after they got off the plane, and I found I was in quite a bit of a rush from it, like all the events were just a rise to the clamatic event, but when you cut it off, I found myself kind of empty. It was a huge disapointment to me.

I give it a 4/5, and an 8/10. It seriously was an amazing flash, you just need to get some motivation to actually keep you on task and take the time to finish the product.

I do sincerely hope you will attempt to make this movie again. It really is a very good start, and should be given a second chance. The realness it brings is really a great idea, and as I said, refreshing even.

Keep up the great work,

MattP

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review. I don't really plan to have any pride in sprite movies since they don't take that long to make and aren't that hard to make. It just takes time to get things where I want.

I tried adding more quality to everything including movements, sounds, visual styles, and ideas which helped me get the ideas of what they'd do and how they'd act if they were in that exact situation in a movie or game or something.

The music choice wasn't that great in my opinion. I could have used another theme that I had but I felt this one was the post fitting out of the ones I had and could find.

I rushed because I've been stuck on the airplane since December and barely worked on the end of the airplane in February / March. I found it disappointing too.

I'd make this movie again if I had all the files from my other computer but it's too slow and all the wires and the moniter and such are scattered around the table next to my desk but if I ever decide to fix my area, I'll surely remake this or at least fix the parts I felt needed to be fixed.

Sonic Epilogue Full Movie

"Extremely well made!"

date: May 4, 2009

I like the intro. It gets you up to speed quick. It immeadiatly implies you're creating this based on something. And it also gives an atmosphere that carries through the entire movie.

One thing I can't help but notice was the consistantcy for Sonic. At times it's his classic single spine down his head, while others is his newer version (Best comparable with Sonic X) But other than that, the graphics were amazing, and very detailed. The emotion was also really well shown. Side note, I found the evil kid hilariously drawn, a great update from the classic show XD

The transitions were also well made. One part that could maybe use a bit more emphasis was what the evil Sonic might have done while in the evil form? But other than that, I found it flawless.

The choice of music was also a huge plus. It's tone matched every part of the Flash. My only issue was how it cut off at the end. (Which may be the cause of it originally made for something different? XD) The song was beautiful, brilliant even. Even if you listen to the lyrics, you can match it with the Flash. (And don't worry, Techno FTW!). Although I do think the flash matches this version a lot better than "Numb" although that's just me. I feel Numb takes a lot of the emotion out of it, as the most dramatic parts were over powered.

I must say though, my favorite part, that really stuck out to me, was the immense emotion from when Sonic holds Tails by the throat and the flashbacks happen. The amount of pure emotion was enough to almost bring tears to anyone's eyes. Extreme props there. Even now I love watching that part, and the transition was flawless. =D

I only wonder what it is the other characters play into this? As the intro showed Bunny, and the like. IT makes me want to read the comic that this is based off.

But as to the other comments saying "What is this the Epilogue to?" Simple attention to the intro, as well as reading Author's Comments easily answers such things.

Another small complaint I have is the over dramatized slap of Sally, it was a small looking slap, and she passed out and Tail's reaction to it was a bit over done, but I suppose it couldn't be avoided, so it's all good XD

I must say, i'm so very impressed by this flash, and could easily compete with a majority of flashes similar, as I believe the series "Power Star" has a similar take on this type of situation (I've only seen the last one of the series, so i'm not 100%).

It's very easy to give this flash a perfect score. The amount of work and effort put into this definantly shows, and was a huge pay off in the end.

Another small thing that will bother me until I read the comic is what some of the lines you showed them saying are XD So i'll definantly check out the comic.

Overall, huge props on this flash. The emotion and effort really show, and is an instant favorite for any fan of not only Sonic, but fans of drama, epic sad tales, and all in between.

I give it a 5/5 and a 10/10

I will definantly look forward to any future works you may do. (Which I hope are going to happen!)

Nico-do 2nd - Kirbomix~

"Woah..."

date: March 25, 2009

To be honest, this was amazing. The talent in this flash really stood out to me. One of the little things that went a long way was the avatars that represented the current singers (Although it seemed all the artists couldn't fit at times, was there more than room for?)

I've heard of Neko Neko Douga, although I'm not very familiar with them... maybe because i've lack of the understanding of Japanese. However, they are still very popular in the U.S. and also talented in the Paroding on Games and Anime. So a project like this is pretty fun to see, especially an English one =D A very unique project that was very rewarding in the end, kudos (So not sure how to spell that...)

I really could grasp some of the parodies you sang (And had a lot of fun looking for them XD) like Megaman, Kiki's Delivery Service (Or was it Hal's Moving Castle?), Kirby, Case Closed (Detective Conan in Japan), Prince of Tennis, Death Note (Probably the most epic part XD "FUCK YOU KIRB!!!" ... Kirby for the win!) and the likes.

Although I really must commend you all for your singing talents. There were quite a few points that I was amazed at how great you all sounded (Of course there were parts I wondered what the hell you all were doing, off key and such, but it was all in good fun). I also really liked the dramatic Myosaki (?) Project part sang by Cailen (?) and Niro.

Not to play favorites, but I found Rosey, Rina-chan (Who I must say is probably one of the 4 most popular Voice actors I see around Newgrounds), Niro, Kirbopher, and Zetto to be among the best of them (Parcially the fact they sang the most parts and I could get familiar with them the best, although Rosey stood out XD)

The Animation was great, and the transitions were amazing. And the fact that it seemed you winged the whole thing added some very well executed humor and I must admit, this makes me quite interested in seeing the first one.

Overall, a really great Flash XD I found it very amuzing and addicting. There's so many more things I'd like to say about this clever Collab XD But it'd take too much space. XD

Just great work. I hope you lied to us all and make another XD but we all know how busy you are Kirbopher XD Great work on everything guys!

DBZ Vegetto vs Buu

"This was pretty great!"

submission: DBZ Vegetto vs Buu
date: January 17, 2009

This movie is among one of the best Sprite Flashes i've seen. Your animations were smooth and it was easy to keep up with. Only complaint I see is the final scene. It took a bit long to charge up (It seemed like it because one flash of lightning every 10 seonds. MAybe make them appear a bit faster?) And the ending blast could have been longer. (Maybe have them collide and them battling for the final attack?)

The effects were really great, and this is a great movie. (Dunno why people are voting so low...)

9/10 and a 5/5 =D I hope to see more like this in the future =P

It didn't need a plot people, he wanted to do a fight scene. He said it in the Author Comments. Don't take off points for what he didn'twant to include.

It's a random battle for a reason =P

January 17, 2009

Author's Response:

Thank you for a constructive and spirit lifting review, that kinda made me happy lol. Your right about the lightning and ending blast part...the lightning power up was a first for me as I've never done intense power up scenes, so I'm a little newbish at that.

I agree the ending could of been better, but it's harder than it looks making these things...especially with limited resources.

Thx for understanding the no plot thing as well, this will be my last random battle though so that shouldn't be why ppl vote low from now on =).

Mario-Combat

"It's a great game... but,,,"

submission: Mario-Combat
date: December 4, 2008

This game is amazing, don't get me wrong. The controls were good, the combos are great too, along with the originality for gameplay. However...

1) The camera was horrendous. I would jump and fire is right under me. You can't move the camera to see where you're going. Granted, jumping allows a wider camera, however, it still doesn't go down enough when you're faced with a cliff...

2) The jumping was lacking... At the Warp Pipe, I couldn't jump high enough at first and would always bounce off the Pipe. I mean, if you're Mario, you should be able to jump a moderatly high altitude. (Fighting the boss, I didn't encounter the problem quite as much.)

3) Fighting could gain some work... When at the pipe, I came across 3 Red Koopas.... needless to say, they were punishing me. ONce you fall between them (Because you couldn't see them cause the camera was pretty close, and I was in the air.) it's pretty much impossible to escape. They throw you on the wall and you bounce back. So you can't get out.

4) The Health meter. It's pretty pointless to have Health. It heals every area, and you get no Health loss for falling off a cliff into scorching lava. The least you could've done is not have it reset and have maybe a Mushroom in a block, or a box you combo, or heck, one that flies out of a Koopa you spanked.

5) Add a story? I mean, not everyone (Including me) watched Power Star. So putting you in Bowsers Castle and saying go kill a turtle isn't the best thing to go off of. My advice, would be to maybe add a Dialogue before the fight to spark a sense of a story?. Maybe "I'm here to get revenge for my brother!" Then start the fight?

Although those were the bad things I saw, the great things I found were.

1) The inclution of a Score system. That was great. It made you want to figure out the best button combinations to get that high score (I only got 474 points after I beat it XD)

2) The smooth running. That was great. I liked how eas it was to run to the next part.

3) The wall jump. That was a nice add-on. Although it was buggy because if you didn't press the direction buttons and the up button, you would stop mid way and fall.

4) (Not sure if this was intentional) Wall kick. You could wall jump up a wall. (Like in Megaman ZX Or Megaman X) It was mainly at Bowser's fight, but thought it should be mentioned.

5) The great graphics overall. I was really impressed with the overall look of the game, and found the fighting stance of Mario hilariously awesome.

Overall, this game was a really well exeuted game. And I hope you could make one that is perhaps longer and maybe add a couple little extras in there.

Sorry for the long review, but I thought I should get my thoughts out before I forgot them. =D
